I have my name on a storage unit along with an ex BF- can he take my name off the lease w/o my ok or signature?

He lives in the state where we both lived, and now I live in another state. Its a recent breakup- and he is trying to take my name off the lease so he can keep all my possessions until I pay him an undisclosed amount of money. Anyone know if he can do this or if its illegal? Hes turned into one nasty and money hungry person. Ps- the breakup is because he was cheating on me. What a guy....
