Tips on how to motivate your kid?

My son is really smart, he just doesn't apply himself in school. Therefore he does really poorly, failing tests and he is already behind in school work. Yelling, screaming, bribery, taking things away, standing over him while he does his school work.. all of that just doesn't work. does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
