Do Gold Claw have to have a land area? Please Help!?

I have three Gold Claw (Gold Fiddler Crab) and i've heard that they need to have a place to get fully out of the water. Is this true? I have a branch sticking a couple of inches out of the water but thats it. Should I have something more? How do I provide more land area for them? I have fish so I can't take water out.
